Itinerary
Arrival in Paro | Transfer to Thimphu
Your journey begins with one of the most scenic flights in the world, descending into the lush Paro Valley surrounded by forested mountains. On arrival, you’ll be warmly received by your guide and begin your drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, following the gentle flow of the Paro Chhu river. In the afternoon, visit the towering Buddha Dordenma, one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, offering sweeping views over the Thimphu valley — a peaceful introduction to Bhutan’s spiritual landscape. Overnight: Thimphu
Thimphu Exploration
Today is about experiencing the rhythm of Bhutan’s capital — a city that feels more like a large town, with no traffic lights and a deeply rooted culture. Visit the unique Motithang Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s national animal, the takin. Continue to the National Memorial Chorten, where locals gather daily to pray and circumambulate. At the Zorig Chusum Institute, you’ll see students learning Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts — from painting to wood carving. Later, stroll through local markets and streets, offering a glimpse into everyday Bhutanese life. Overnight: Thimphu
Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass
Drive east toward Punakha, crossing the scenic Dochula Pass (3,100m). On clear days, you’ll see panoramic Himalayan views, framed by 108 memorial chortens. Descending into the warmer Punakha valley, visit the stunning Punakha Dzong, widely considered the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan, located at the confluence of two rivers. Take a short walk across the Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan, offering scenic river views. Overnight: Punakha
Punakha to Paro
Enjoy a relaxed morning in the peaceful Punakha valley. Take a gentle hike through rice fields to the Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Fertility Temple, associated with Bhutan’s beloved saint, the “Divine Madman.” For those seeking a bit more adventure: White Water Rafting in Punakha (Optional) – A scenic float along the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, combining gentle rapids with views of forests, villages, and the Punakha Dzong from the water. Later, drive back to Paro, a quiet valley known for its traditional architecture and open landscapes. Spend the evening exploring this charming heritage town at your own pace. Overnight: Paro
Tiger’s Nest Hike (Taktsang Monastery)
Today is the highlight of your Bhutan journey. Hike to the iconic Paro Taktsang, perched dramatically on a cliff 900 meters above the valley floor. The trail winds through pine forests, prayer flags, and viewpoints that slowly reveal the monastery in all its beauty. This sacred site is where Guru Rinpoche is believed to have meditated, making it one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas. After the hike: Traditional Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath (Optional) – A soothing post-hike ritual using heated river stones to relax and restore the body. Overnight: Paro
